A millionaire once said. "I don’t know anything about art, I only know what I like."
Supply and Demand….for most paintings they are in low supply (unless mass produced) and in that case the original copy is worth more.
but Demand is what drive it (and our economy for that matter) demand is how many people want it and how much they are willing to pay – sort of like an auction. Demand can go up if there is less supply, if the art is more original, or if the artist is famous
The difference between art nuovo and picassos work is "reproduction." picasso’s works go for more because of his different style and his controbution towards cubism. He was different and one of his kind, which made him famous, hence his works meaning a lot more. Also, artists make more money once they are dead, which is a shame, but its true. When it coems to art nuovo, it was around the time of the Bauhaus (a studio in germany) which used artworks and ideas from art nuovo and destijl to inspire them to create furniture and household items for example and make them more aestetically pleasing to look at, rather than the ease of use of the actual product. The reason Art nuovo works weren’t as valuable was because they were designs which were easier to reproduce. The printing press was popular, and art was becoming un-unique in a sence, because now, anyone could ‘own’ that design, so to say. Thats the main reason as to why it wasnt as valuable as picassos works. You look at the Mona Lisa. She has been reproduced on so many books, cards, interenet, shirts, mugs, magazines, etc, that its lost its pure meaning.
